The Genoese Fortino
By the 16th century the sea was now so far removed from the walls that, to protect the city from the incursions of Turkish pirates, the need was felt to build a fort to defend the coastline. In the work he provided, in the sixteenth century, the Republic of Genoa from which Albenga was then dependent. And for this reason the fort is still called "Genoese".
It is located in Piazza Europa and is accessed from the side street of Viale Italia, 300 meters from the beach, since in the meantime the coastal sanding has continued. Surrounded by modern buildings, a modest effort of imagination is needed to imagine it as a lonely lookout guarding the coast.
