14. The "Olive Tree Civilization" Museum

Listen to audio of this page

A few steps from Porta Torlaro , along the walls, is the Sommariva Museum , entirely dedicated to the olive oil culture. Here you can learn the history of one of Liguria's oldest and most important crafts.

After its expansion between 2008 and 2010, the museum grew from 200 to 400 square meters and is connected by an underground tunnel to the Sommariva Oil Mill , which has been in operation since 1915. The exhibition illustrates the history of olive oil production through historical artifacts, tools, and documents. Contemporary art is also featured: painting, sculpture, and photography find their place in the rooms, thanks to the Sommariva family's commitment to promoting local and international artists.
